San Diego Prosecutor Adam Gordon Appointed as U.S. Attorney for Southern District of California

SAN DIEGO — Adam Gordon, a career prosecutor with expertise in combating the fentanyl epidemic, was sworn in Friday as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California, one of the nation's busiest federal districts covering San Diego and Imperial counties.

The 43-year-old Gordon was appointed by Attorney General Pamela Bondi, with U.S. District Court Chief Judge Cynthia A. Bashant administering the oath of office.

Gordon's appointment comes with an interim tag as he was neither nominated by President Donald Trump nor confirmed by the Senate, though he will exercise the full powers of the position. Under federal law, he can serve in this capacity for up to 120 days or until the president nominates and the Senate confirms someone for the position.

Gordon replaces Andrew Haden, who had served as acting U.S. Attorney since February 12 when President Trump fired Tara McGrath, who had been appointed by President Joe Biden.

Background and Experience

Prior to this appointment, Gordon served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California since 2019, most recently working in the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces Unit. He previously served as the office's Criminal Division Opioid Coordinator for approximately three years.

Before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office, Gordon worked as a Deputy District Attorney in San Diego County, where he focused on prosecuting violent crimes. He left the district attorney's office in 2014 to support Robert Brewer's unsuccessful district attorney campaign. Brewer later became Trump's pick to lead the U.S. Attorney's Office during his first term and hired Gordon in 2019.

According to former U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer, Gordon is "a terrifically talented trial lawyer — organized, ethical and hard working... a terrific prosecutor and leader".

Gordon holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University (2004) and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law (2008).

Priorities and Initiatives

In a statement following his swearing-in, Gordon said: "Thank you to President Trump and Attorney General Bondi for the opportunity to serve as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California. I am deeply honored to lead this office and protect the people of this district."

Gordon emphasized border security as a priority, stating: "For too long, criminal organizations have exploited the chaos at our border. That chaos of criminality and lack of consequences cannot prevail. Together with our dedicated law enforcement partners, we will focus our resources on the Operation Take Back America priorities including securing the border, prosecuting cartel leaders, and removing dangerous offenders from our communities."

Gordon is noted for his role in creating the Fentanyl Abatement and Suppression Team (FAST) in San Diego County in September 2022, which is now considered a national model for targeting significant fentanyl distributors and reducing overdose deaths.

About the Office

As U.S. Attorney, Gordon becomes the chief federal law enforcement official for the district. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California is one of the nation's largest, with approximately 300 attorneys and staff members.

The office enforces federal criminal laws in the Southern District of California and represents the federal government in civil litigation.
