Adobe Bluffs Park Closure Frustrates Residents Amid Delays
Adobe Bluffs Park Closure Frustrates Residents Amid Delays
Rancho Peñasquitos, CA – On a typical weekend, Adobe Bluffs Park would be alive with the sounds of children playing and families enjoying the outdoors. But for months, the playground has remained fenced off and unusable, leaving residents frustrated and seeking answers.
The park, located in the Rancho Peñasquitos neighborhood, has been in limbo since June when chain-link fencing was put up around the play structures. Longtime resident James Rogers, who has lived in the area for 11 years, recalls that the park initially closed during the COVID-19 pandemic but reopened about a year later—only to be shut down again.
Despite numerous inquiries, Rogers and his neighbors have been met with vague responses. "I don't have an update," he says officials repeatedly tell him. Explanations have ranged from plans for a remodel last fall to safety concerns about the structures and the need for renovations.
Frustrated by the lack of progress, residents turned to CBS8’s Working for You team for help. Upon investigation, the station reached out to District 5 Councilmember Marni von Wilpert, whose office confirmed that the project is fully funded but delayed due to the need for custom parts.
"I share my residents’ frustrations about ongoing delays in the Adobe Bluffs Park repair project," Von Wilpert said in a statement. "My office remains in constant communication with Mayor Todd Gloria’s office and the Parks and Recreation Department, and we will continue to advocate on behalf of Rancho Peñasquitos residents to ensure this project is completed."
For now, families in the neighborhood remain hopeful that city officials will take action soon, bringing the beloved community space back to life.

Rancho Los Peñasquitos was the first Mexican land grant in present-day San Diego County. Presidio comandante Francisco María Ruiz fulfilled the conditions of the grant by building a small adobe structure in 1823. Archaeologists have found remains of that structure within one wing of the existing house.
The surrounding park property features more than 10 miles of non-motorized multi-use trails, a staging area, community garden, restrooms, and is a popular venue for weddings and special events.

Established in 2012, the Los Peñasquitos Community Garden is comprised of 20 6' x 16' garden boxes, providing ‘green thumb’ lessees with the space and amenities they need to grow their own produce. The cost is $120 per year. Gardeners are required to visit weekly and garden every season. Call 858-484-7504 for information, and to be added to the wait list. Please be prepared to share your first and last name, your phone number, your email address and a general overview of your gardening experience. You can also send a message to a park ranger.
